Why two quotes for the same room can differ

  • Output: a 5 kW unit for a sunny living room costs more than a 2.5 kW unit for a box room.
  • Range: flagship models are quieter, smarter and more efficient, and priced to match.
  • Distance: a few metres of pipe are normally included; loft routes or long runs add labour and copper.
  • Height and access: high brackets, flat roofs, scaffold or restricted parking take extra time.
  • Power: a new circuit is standard; an old consumer unit may need upgrading.
  • Drainage: if water cannot fall naturally, a condensate pump is added.
  • Building fabric: listed walls, stone and decorative finishes need more care.

What a proper quote should list

  • Every unit by make, model and kW, with SEER and SCOP ratings
  • Pipe length allowed for, and the cost per extra metre
  • Brackets or stands, trunking and the condensate route
  • Electrical work, pressure test, vacuum and commissioning
  • Warranty terms, lead time, payment stages and validity

Keeping the price sensible

  • A wall-mounted split is the most cost-effective option for most single rooms.
  • Placing indoor and outdoor units back to back shortens the pipe run.
  • Doing two or three rooms together on a multi-split avoids repeat call-out and set-up costs.
  • A video survey saves a visit and speeds things up.

Prices in Cambridge

Our Cambridge quotes include travel anywhere in the city and South Cambridgeshire. The things that most often push a Cambridge price up are access: rear-yard-only terraces, flat-roof mounting, long pipe routes through lofts in period houses, and the extra care needed in listed buildings.

Commercial jobs in labs and occupied offices sometimes need out-of-hours working or extra protection, which we price clearly as separate lines.

What it costs to run

With electricity at 26.32p per kWh under the Ofgem cap from 1 October 2026, cooling a room with a 3.5 kW system costs roughly 7–8p an hour after the first warm-up. Using it as a heater costs around a quarter of the price of an electric radiator. Check your own numbers with the running cost calculator.
