Heat pumps in Cambridge

In Cambridge we fit air-to-air heat pumps to replace electric heaters in flats and student lets, to heat garden offices and studios, and to warm extensions that the central heating cannot reach. Many organisations in the city have net zero targets, and moving small buildings off gas heaters is an easy step.

What an air-to-air heat pump is

It is the same equipment as a split air conditioner, set to run in reverse. The outdoor unit extracts heat from outside air, even in frost, and the indoor unit blows it into the room. Flip the mode in summer and it cools.

The benefits

  • Cheap to run: a seasonal efficiency (SCOP) of about 3.5–5, so several units of heat for each unit of electricity.
  • Quick: rooms warm up in minutes and each has its own control.
  • All-season: heating, cooling and dehumidifying from one unit.
  • No combustion: nothing burnt on site, so lower carbon and no flue.

Good places to use one

Flats and homes with electric panel or storage heaters, garden offices and studios, extensions the boiler cannot reach, and small offices or shops still on gas or electric heaters.

About grants

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays towards air-to-water heat pumps for radiators and hot water, not air-to-air systems. Air-to-air costs much less to install, so for single rooms and small spaces it is often still the cheaper route overall.

FAQs

Heat pumps: common questions

Does it still heat when it is freezing outside?

Yes. Modern units keep working well below 0°C, defrosting automatically.

Could it be my only heating?

For a flat or a small home it can heat the rooms, but it does not make hot water.

Can I get a grant?

Not through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which excludes air-to-air systems. The lower installed cost usually compensates.
