Home air conditioning in Cambridge

Loft conversions in Victorian and 1930s houses are the hottest rooms in Cambridge homes, followed closely by top-floor rooms in new-build townhouses with large windows. A small wall unit or a floor console under the eaves usually solves it.

Home offices are the other big request. Many people in Cambridge work from home with several screens, which add heat to a room all day; we size for that, not just the floor area.

Where it makes the biggest difference

  • Bedrooms: night modes run quieter than most fridges, so you can sleep with the windows shut.
  • Lofts and top floors: the roof gathers heat all day; a small unit takes it out in minutes.
  • Studies and home offices: screens and computers add heat; steady temperatures make long days easier.
  • Garden offices and studios: one unit provides heating in winter and cooling in summer.
  • Rooms with lots of glass: kitchens, orangeries and open-plan living spaces.

A heater too

Nearly every home system is a heat pump that runs in reverse in winter, producing roughly 3.5–5 units of heat per unit of electricity. That makes it much cheaper than plug-in or panel heaters. More on air-to-air heat pumps.

Looks and noise

Indoor units go where the airflow travels along the room, not straight at a bed or chair. Pipework is kept short and boxed neatly, and the outdoor unit is placed to keep sound away from bedrooms on both sides of the fence.

Running costs

Cooling a room with a typical 3.5 kW unit costs a few pence an hour once it is up to temperature. Try the running cost calculator with your tariff.

Permissions

Plenty of installations need no planning permission, but listed buildings, conservation areas, flats and street-facing walls can. We tell you what applies before you book.

Two or three phone clips of the room, the wall and the outside space give us almost everything a surveyor would look at. Upload them and a written price usually follows within a working day.

  1. Record the space

Walk the room slowly, then show the wall and the outside.

  2. Send it here

Long clips are fine: uploads go in small pieces and resume if they drop.

FAQs

Homes: common questions

How loud is it indoors?

About 19–25 dB on the lowest setting, quieter than a whisper.

Does it work for heating in winter?

Yes. Reverse-cycle units heat efficiently well below freezing.

Will it make the air too dry?

It removes some moisture, which most people find more comfortable. Settings can reduce this.
