Installing air conditioning in Cambridge
In Cambridge we spend a lot of time on route planning. Terraced streets often have no side access, so the outdoor unit goes in a rear yard or on a flat roof, and pipework runs through a back wall or a loft. In conservation areas we keep equipment off street-facing walls.
On new-build estates such as Eddington, Trumpington Meadows and Cambourne the building is easy to work with, but estate rules and management companies sometimes set out where equipment can go. We give you the unit size, position and noise figures to show them.
How we approach an installation
A good system starts long before the drill comes out. We look at the floor area, ceiling height, glazing, orientation and what the room is used for, then choose a unit that copes with the hottest afternoon without being oversized for the rest of the year.
On the day
- Dust sheets down and furniture moved and covered before we start.
- The indoor unit mounted on a level backplate, high enough to throw air across the room.
- A single core hole for pipes, cable and drain, angled to fall outwards and sealed both sides.
- Insulated copper pipework, flared or brazed, then hidden in white trunking or inside a void.
- The outdoor unit on brackets or a stand, isolated from the structure to stop vibration travelling.
- A dedicated electrical circuit with the correct protection.
- Nitrogen pressure test, deep vacuum, refrigerant released and the system run in both modes.
- A walk-through of the remote or app, plus how and when to clean the filters.
Which system suits which space
- Single split: one room, one outdoor unit; quickest to fit and the best value.
- Multi-split: up to five rooms on one outdoor unit, handy where outside space is limited.
- Floor console: for eaves rooms and walls under sloping ceilings.
- Cassette or ducted: for offices, labs and shops that want equipment above the ceiling.
Timescales
One room is a one-day job in most homes. Two to four rooms take two or three days. Businesses get a programme agreed in advance, including out-of-hours working if the building is occupied.
Getting the size right
Oversized units short-cycle and leave rooms feeling clammy; undersized ones run flat out and still struggle. For a quick estimate use the size calculator, then we confirm it before you commit.

Two or three phone clips of the room, the wall and the outside space give us almost everything a surveyor would look at. Upload them and a written price usually follows within a working day.
Record the space
Walk the room slowly, then show the wall and the outside.

Installation: common questions
How many days will it take?
One day for a typical single room; two or three days for multi-room systems.
How big is the hole in the wall?
Normally about 65 mm per indoor unit, sealed and finished neatly inside and out.
Does the outdoor unit have to be on the wall?
No. A ground stand or flat roof frame is often quieter and easier to service.
Can the outdoor unit go on a flat roof?
Yes, on a proper frame or stand that spreads the load, with safe access for servicing. It is often the neatest option on terraced houses.
